What Is Relaxation Massage?

We are pleased to be expanding our house services here at Groton Chiropractic and Massage Center. We are adding in a service called “Relaxation Massage.” So we thought we’d take a moment to tell you a little about it.

Relaxation massage, also known as Swedish massage, is a more gentle and smooth type of massage that targets muscle tension, increases peripheral circulation, and provides stress relief and a feeling of relaxation. This gentle but effective type of massage focuses on adhesions and improving circulation, which can help relieve back and neck tension, aid in relieving tension headaches, improve sleep, reduce stress, and help with your range of motion.

Unlike deep tissue, it will not address the muscle or connective tissue, and is not for the treatment of sports injuries, but rather relieves tension in the body. It’s also a wonderful option for people who like a more gentle touch.

Are All Adjustments The Same?

A common question is “are all chiropractic adjustments the same?”
The answer is a resounding “no!”

Not only do different doctors provide different styles of adjustments, but the care we provide is also unique to the needs of the patient. It may sometimes look like each adjustment is the same or similar, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

We tailor every adjustment to the specific needs and medical conditions of the patient on the table, as well as the type and severity of the pain. The spinal adjustments we choose to do are influenced by the patients age, medical history, size, and current and chronic pain. We take every bit of this, and more, into consideration before even touching you for the first time.

The same goes for our massage therapists, whether you’re seeing them for a full massage session, or getting an integrative session, mixing massage with chiropractic (yes, we do that!).

FAQ

Some Frequently Asked Questions by new patients at Groton Chiropractic:

Q. Can I really get massage with my chiropractic adjustment?
A. YES! We offer massage therapy with our chiropractic adjustments for no additional cost. Something that you won’t find at other offices in the area… at least without a big upcharge ;)

Q. Do chiropractic adjustments hurt?
A. Everyone is different and come in in different situations, but in general while there is some feelings of pressure and can be mild discomfort, an adjustment is not painful. Now, if it’s your first ever adjustment, or first in a while, you might have some soreness the next day, just like when you exercise. Some work has been done on your body! But it shouldn’t be severe, and should pass quite quickly. And most importantly, once any uncommon aches do pass, you should feel much better.

Q. Will one adjustment “do it?”
A. Again, everyone is different, but it is uncommon for one adjustment to solve someone’s complaint. Bodies are complex, and often the cause of the pain has taken a long time to build up, and will take some time to resolve. We won’t string you along though, and we do offer plans and packages if you end up being someone who does need several visits to get your body back to feeling fantastic!

Q. Okay, how and when can I schedule an appointment!
A: Awesome! You can call or text us (that’s right!) at 860-445-5000 and schedule an appointment during the week or on Saturday, early, mid day, or even in the evening! We know you have a life, and we’re available when you need us.

Winter Sports Services

Whether you’ve been traveling to far off fabulous ski resorts or enjoying hiking through the flurries in the woods here in Southeastern Connecticut, this time of the year is not free form its share of injuries. From falls to to twists and sprains, whether major or minor, these bumps, bruises, and breaks can follow you for months or years to come. But chiropractic can help get you back on your feet and into you normal routine faster and with less pain. Check out how below, then give us a call at 860-445-5000

Sports injuries can affect just about any part of the spinal, neurological, and skeletal system. The heavy physical stress can have a compounded affect on even the most minor of injuries. If not treated in a timely manner, these minor injuries may result in more severe injuries; which may lead to long term consequences on your mental and physical health but also your financial well-being. For this reason, many athletes choose to undergo preemptive chiropractic treatment.

Our chiropractic approach to treating sports injuries – including those sustained at home – comprises of a blend of natural techniques and noninvasive methods; such as physiotherapy and chiropractic massage. We begin with an all-inclusive chiropractic examination. This can pinpoint the location and nature of the injury. Additionally, this may reveal any pressure points created by the injury.

Once this is determined, a recommended course of corrective treatment may be given. This may include receiving an x-ray to check for any fractures, broken bones, or tissue damage. More serious injuries may require an MRI or CT scan - through our Physicians Network - may be suggested to determine any internal injuries. For injuries that have affected the nervous or spinal system, treatment may include a single chiropractic adjustment, or a series of adjustments, that are focused on improving flexibility and the return of natural movements to the injured joints.

No matter your sport, we here at Groton Chiropractic are committed to getting you back into your best performing self that we can achieve!

It’s that time of year once again. Once again folks are recommitting themselves to being their best, and health and wellness goals are great choices! Here are a few suggestions from our team here at Barnett Chiropractic on how to look and feel your best in 2022:

  1. Prioritize Self Care
The best way to start taking better care of yourself is by literally taking care of yourself. Make time for YOU. What that looks like is totally up to you - a nice bath, an evening out, or a nice massage, whatever nourishes your body and soul is the right choice!

  2. Get Regular Chiropractic
Keeping your spine in alignment is one of the best ways to keep yourself looking and feeling great! There’s nothing wrong with waiting until you’ve had a fall or an injury to come in, but if you prefer to avoid discomfort and improve your health, to move forward with your health goals, then talk to Dr. Bob or Dr. Sarah about a wellness plan today!

  3. Add Regular Increase On Your Walks
Walk 10 minutes longer than normal each day you go out or bring along the doggies. You can increase your activity each month. Remember that starting with even 10 minutes a day is a great way to begin.

  4. Hydrate!
Hydration is key for losing weight and cellular health. Make sure to keep drinking water and finish 2 bottles of water every day.
Get yourself a nice water bottle to keep with you as you go about your day and set reminders on your phone or have a well-placed post it note handy so you don’t forget to keep hydrated! As Dr Bob for more nifty hydration tips!

  5. Try Something New
This is a big one! Step out of your comfort zone just once and do something this year that you will be proud of this time next year. What would make next year you feel proud? Maybe you’ve had something on your bucket list for a while that you’ve been wanting to try and experience. It’s time to get planning and make it happen.

  6. Get Enough Rest
Sleep is essential for our health, and it’s no surprise that these days – with all our screens and the pressure of modern life – it’s one of the most underrated aspects of our wellbeing. Make a commitment to your sleep this year. Go to bed at 10. Not sometimes, all the time. Create a wind-down routine that works for you by turning off screens at sundown, meditating or practicing gratitude and some gentle stretches. Make the ritual work and maintain good sleep hygiene – no laptops in bed!

  7. Ask For Help
If you’ve been struggling (and many of us have!), this might be the year that you ask for help in your life. Don’t struggle in silence. Seek out the help that you really need to start making the changes you want to see in your life.

  8. Save For The Things That Matter
Many of us make the resolution to save money. It’s okay to spend money on what makes you happy, but you can also always save money by asking yourself “do I really need this?” Question your purchases before you click and buy. Save for the things that really matter to you

  9. Keep Track Of The Good Times
It’s so easy to forget the good times and overly dwell on the negative times. But keeping track of the good times can help give you a chance to really express and practice gratitude and remember the positive moments! Take more photos of days out and memories you experience, and document the good times so the future you has something to look back on. Start a journal and keep it regularly – even a line or two a day is a great start!

  10. Eat Your Greens
Integrate a little more greenery into your diet by committing to eat veggie more often – even just one day a week is a great way to start. Have a meat-free day, try out some new veggie recipes, or find ways to add more fruit and veg into your day. Just one healthier meal a day is a great way to go!

Green Thumb Best Practices

To all those with a green thumb, spring and summer seasons are a favorite time of year! It’s the time for planting and tending to a garden. Doing yard work can be relaxing and enjoyable, however, after a long winter of not engaging in these activities, there can be risks to your back, spine, joints, and muscles.

Warm Up Your Muscles and Joints

Stretch Stretch Stretch! Taking the time to stretch and essentially warm up before beginning each gardening session can make all the difference in avoiding muscle pain and strains. In general It can also help you keep your back, neck, and spine healthy, balanced and free of subluxations.

Once you are finished doing gardening/yard work, another stretching session can help you to avoid stiffness, tightness and muscle pain that evening or the next day.

Use Good Form

When gardening activities and doing yard work responsibilities, proper form is necessary to avoiding injury. Try hard to not bend at the waist when lifting or planting. Instead, keep the spine straight and bend at the knees. Keep all joints tracking straight as you garden or do yard work; try not to twist or lean at awkward angles.

Manage Sun and Heat Exposure

As the summer continues, hot temperatures will only come and be a hazard while gardening. Be sure to wear proper sun protection to avoid sunburn, drink lots of water to stay hydrated and take breaks as appropriate so that you don’t overheat.

Chiropractic Q&A

We hear a lot of questions about chiropractic care, so here is a list of our frequently asked questions, asked and answered!

Q: What conditions do chiropractors treat?
A: Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) care for patients of all ages.  DCs are especially well known for their expertise in caring for patients with back pain, neck pain and headaches, particularly with their highly skilled chiropractic adjustments. They also care for patients with a wide range of injuries and disorders of the muscles, ligaments and joints. These painful conditions often involve or impact the nervous system, which can cause referred pain and dysfunction distant to the region of injury. DCs also counsel patients on exercise, healthy habits, and occupational and lifestyle modification.

Q: Is chiropractic treatment safe?
A: Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal complaints. Although chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects. The risks associated with chiropractic, however, are very small. Many patients feel immediate relief following chiropractic treatment, but some may experience mild soreness, stiffness or aching, just as they do after some forms of exercise. Current research shows that minor discomfort or soreness following spinal manipulation typically fades within 24 hours.

Q: Is chiropractic treatment appropriate for children?
A: Yes, children can benefit from chiropractic care. Children are very physically active and experience many types of falls and blows from activities of daily living as well as from participating in sports. Injuries such as these may cause many symptoms including back and neck pain, stiffness, soreness or discomfort. Chiropractic care is always adapted to the individual patient. It is a highly skilled treatment, and in the case of children, very gentle.

Q: Do insurance plans cover chiropractic?
A: Yes. Chiropractic care is included in most health insurance plans, including major medical plans, workers’ compensation, Medicare, some Medicaid plans, and Blue Cross Blue Shield plans for federal employees, among others.

Q: How is a chiropractic adjustment performed?
A: Chiropractic adjustment or manipulation is a manual procedure that utilizes the highly refined skills developed during the Doctor of Chiropractic’s intensive years of chiropractic education. The chiropractic physician typically uses their hands or an instrument to manipulate the joints of the body, particularly the spine, in order to restore or enhance joint function. This often helps resolve joint inflammation and reduces the patient's pain. Chiropractic manipulation is a highly controlled procedure that rarely causes discomfort. The chiropractor adapts the procedure to meet the specific needs of each patient. Patients often note positive changes in their symptoms immediately following treatment.

 Q: Is chiropractic treatment ongoing?
A: The hands-on nature of the chiropractic treatment is essentially what requires patients to visit the chiropractor a number of times. To be treated by a chiropractor, a patient needs to be in his or her office. In contrast, a course of treatment from medical doctors often involves a pre-established plan that is conducted at home (i.e. taking a course of antibiotics once a day for a couple of weeks). A chiropractor may provide acute, chronic, and/or preventive care thus making a certain number of visits sometimes necessary. Your doctor of chiropractic should tell you the extent of treatment recommended and how long you can expect it to last.

Q: Why is there a popping sound when a joint is adjusted?
A: Adjustment (or manipulation) of a joint may result in the release of a gas bubble between the joints, which makes a popping sound. The same thing occurs when you “crack” your knuckles. The noise is caused by the change of pressure within the joint, which results in gas bubbles being released. There is usually minimal, if any, discomfort involved.

When you visit a chiropractor because you’re having a specific problem or you just want to improve your overall health and well being, you are already taking an outstandingly positive approach to your health.  Most people are unaware of all of the benefits of keeping your spine and nervous system healthy, the regular chiropractic care.

Here are a few  health benefits you can receive from chiropractic:

  • Improved Moods
It may sound weird and far fetched, but chiropractic, actually makes you happier. There are studies to back this up. It helps to improve hormone balance. Decreasing the bad hormones like cortisol and increasing the good hormones, such as dopamine and norepinephrine makes a big difference in how the brain and body works and how a person feels.

  • Sleep Better
Chiropractors focus on your spine, correcting any misalignments that are present and boosting the spine’s overall health. This allows the pain and tension that build in the spine to be released, and the more comfortable the body, the easier it is to relax and fall asleep.

  • Have More Energy
In my experience, when someone is under chiropractic care for a while they begin to notice some of the positive side benefits of chiropractic, including more energy and less fatigue. As one knows, the better you sleep, the more energy you have.

  • Avoid Drugs and Hospitals
Chiropractic is a drug-free approach to pain relief and pain management.
For many people, their addiction and wish for pain medications stems from seeking pain management for an injury or chronic condition, such as back or knee pain. If you’re not in pain, you won’t go to the hospital, to get drugs to help relieve said pain.

  • Less Pain
When the spine is misaligned due to accidents and injuries, pain frequently develops. You overcompensate in other areas, causing pain in those regions as well as the underlying issue. We develop bad habits with the way we sit and and our posture, chiropractic helps us keep everything in line and not overcompensating elsewhere.
